Every drop is precious, every drop counts!

Our youngsters marked the onset of the Odia New Year, Pana Sankranti, with the age-old practice of putting up the Basumati Theki, making Pana, sharing information about the day’s traditions, closing with partaking of a special lunch comprising Odia dishes that are offered as prasad, marking the day.

Inculcating practices that are deeply connected to our rich cultural heritage – learning to make the season’s traditional summer cooler ‘Pana’ that marks the Odia New Year, has been on the Wisdom calendar since inception. Odia cuisine is traditionally defined by seasonality, so much so that seasonal calendar dates are named after food and drink like ‘Pana Sankranti’. ‘Pana’ is made, consumed and shared starting on Mahabishuba Sankranti, the Odia New Year which marks the beginning of summer. Made with different combinations of fruits, especially wood apple (Bael), yoghurt, and milk products like ‘chhena’ and ‘rabdi’, Pana is nutritious and greatly beneficial for health and immunity in the hot summer months. Wisdomites learn and imbibe these practices, helping them to engage with our cultural heritage early on.

Putting up the Basumati Theki – the sacred earthen pot tied from a bamboo and coconut leaf canopy over a tulasi plant, into which they poured Pana, the signature cooling drink of the season, and water, that would drip down in drops over the tulasi through the day, keeping it watered. This ritual is symbolic of the need for water and shade to be available for all to keep cool, during the ensuing summer that sets in with Pana Sankranti, and, a pointer to serve water to all thirsty beings as obligatory humaneness.

At The DN Wisdom Tree Global School, a school as unique as your child, our Heritage Code ensures that each day and every season we stay connected to our roots. Since inception, as we practice, observe and celebrate everything Odia – culture, history, tradition, cuisine, et al., we take immense pride in our roots and work towards anchoring children in the wisdom therein. Our keen interest in disseminating the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) continues unabated. And we are delighted that the Department of Odia Language, Literature & Culture, Government of Odisha, has taken the initiative to observe Odia Pakhya from 1st April to 14th April 2025, to highlight and celebrate our heritage and culture. As we move steadily ahead on the journey of acquainting our children with Odisha’s immense art and culture legacy, we continue to focus on different aspects of the rich traditions that give Odisha its preminent position in the world. Keeping with our Odia Pakhya observance, children got glimpses of Odisha’s historical stone carving and sculpture through a special presentation highlighting our monuments. From the stone elephant carved above the Ashokan rock edict at Dhauligiri, through the caves of Udayagiri, and the Buddist Mahavihara at Ratnagiri, culminating in the Sun Temple of Konark, children saw and learnt about these heritage sites that highlight the skills of Odisha’s master artisans.

Continuing our observance of Odia Pakhya, we screened a documentary on Hirakud Dam for children to learn about the significance of this technological marvel – the longest earthen dam in the world, and the first major multipurpose river valley project in independent India. Mentors explained its construction, the reservoir the dam created which is one of the largest artificial lakes in the country, the purpose served by the dam, how it helps irrigate thousands of acres of agricultural land, while also providing power to industries and communities, and how the reservoir has enabled avifauna to flourish.

In keeping with our Odia Pakhya observance, children viewed a special documentary on Khairi, the Princess of Similipal, to get acquainted with this unique story of human bonding with wildlife. It also helped in highlighting the rich biodiversity of Odisha, and the tiger conservation efforts led by pioneer wildlife conservationist, Shri Saroj Choudhury. Mesmerized, children watched the documentary with rapt attention, and came back to thank us for acquainting them with Khairi’s story. The entire experience, for children and for mentors, was heartwarming.

Continuing our observance of Odia Pakhya, today we introduced our children to the world renowned Heritage Crafts Village of Raghurajpur. Children got acquainted with the famed crafts and art forms practiced by the skilled artisans of Raghurajpur, including the making of Pattachitra, and the importance of Pattas in the rituals of Shree Mandira. They learnt about the Gotipua dance form and its masterful exponents. They had a glimpse of the toys, masks and murals of Raghurajpur village. We believe that children must know and explore the immensely rich cultural heritage of Odisha, and our efforts will remain untiring in enabling this knowledge in their educational journey.

It was with great pride and joy that as part of our Odia Pakhya observance we had a special session on the legendary Odia primer, Chhabila Madhu Barnabodha, for all grades. Written by Bhaktakabi Madhusudan Rao, and first published in 1895 with eight editions thereafter, Chhabila Madhu Barnabodha became part of every Odia household. It demonstrates how Odia alphabets, words, word formation and phrases can all be taught in a simple manner, using imagery of animals, birds, seasons, and sceneries with short verses. Understanding our mother tongue is essential to our identity and for learning pure Odia, the Chhabila Madhu Barnabodha remains incomparable as the introductory primer. The session had a considerable impact on children, who enjoyed learning about this historic primer, while mentors joyfully presented it to them.

In keeping with our Odia Pakhya observance, a special screening of Rabana Chhaya documentary was organised so that children get acquainted with this beautiful shadow puppetry art form of Odisha. Mentors introduced the art form and told children about how the puppets are made, how they are manipulated for their shadows to fall appropriately on the screen, how the themes tell the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, and how the narrator and singers give voice to the stories along with the accompanying musical instruments. Children watched in rapt attention as the magic unfolded, completely engaged in this new art form that they were seeing for the first time.

Odissi belongs to the genre of classical music, distinguished by its unique Sangita-Shastras (musical treatises), a specialized system of Ragas and Talas, and a distinctive style of performance. Odissi music has a rich legacy dating back to the time when Emperor Kharabela, the ruler of Kalinga, patronized this music and dance. Odissi dance, one of the classical dances of India is performed solely with Odissi music. Emerging from the ancient traditional music ritual dedicated to Lord Shree Jagannatha, Odissi music has varied compositional forms written in Sanskrit and Odia. It was originally the music offered as a Seva or service to the Lord of the Universe, and the tradition continues unbroken to this day. Shree Mandira is still considered the fountainhead of Odissi music, and, the most ancient and authentic compositions survive in the temple tradition even today. Continuing efforts to acquaint our young people with their cultural heritage, our Vice Chairperson, Ms. Panchami Manoo Ukil introduced children to acclaimed classical vocalist Vidushi Sunanda Patnaik rendering the famed devotional ‘Jibana Patra Mo Bharicha Kete Mate’. She spoke about the rich legacy of Odisha’s music tradition, of devotionals, and musical practices. The endearing response from children was heart-melting as they listened – hands folded, eyes closed, sitting still, listening in rapt attention. On our journey of Experiential Learning, each day has special moments, each day shines differently.

The richness of Odisha’s cultural heritage is highlighted beautifully by our traditions and festivals. One such festival is Kartika Purnima, which commemorates the ancient maritime rituals of Boita Bandana and Bali Jatra. It pays tribute to our fearless, seafaring Odia traders, who travelled far and wide, taking Odisha’s treasured products and practices to lands and people across Asia and beyond. Anchoring and honouring our legacies and timeless traditions are integral to the experiential knowledge sharing at The DN Wisdom Tree Global School. In keeping with our Heritage Code, our children have celebrated Kartika Purnima since inception in 2018. From making banana stem boats and cotton wicks, narrating and listening to the legendary stories of Ta’poi and her seven brothers, our children are taken through these curated practices every year. Moreover, they have visited the Odisha State Maritime Museum, to augment their knowledge of this invaluable heritage.

Ancient Odisha was a great maritime power from 7th century BC to 13th century AD. Ports of Odisha and its maritime connections find mention in travelogues of famous scholars, geographers and historians like Ptolemy, Pliny, Fahien and Hieun Tsang. That extensive trade existed between Odisha and Cambodia, China, Java, Sumatra, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bali, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Rome and Greece is evident from the ancient artefacts found across the state at archaeological sites, from Sisupalgarh to Ganjam. As part of our efforts to introduce children to the expansive heritage and maritime legacy of our state, Boita Bandana and Kartika Purnima are observed annually with curated activities in school. Additionally, to augment children’s knowledge of the historic legacy, they were taken on a visit to the Odisha State Maritime Museum. It was an enriching outing, and a unique experience for all. For us, these exposure visits along with the actual observance of traditional practices, are key to the experiential learning we espouse for our young people.

Odisha is blessed with an incredibly rich, diverse and rare ecosystem, and is home to a wide array of flora and fauna, thriving in varied habitats like forests, wetlands, river valleys, and coastal regions. About 37% of the state’s geographical area is covered with forests and is credited with five of the sixteen major forest types occurring in India. And it is with pride that we encourage our children to learn and experience Odisha’s biodiversity – connecting and engaging with nature which is exciting and invigorating Experiential Learning. Our little people experienced the magic of woodlands at Anandabana on a day outdoors. They enjoyed the green environs of this urban oasis. We believe that children must get exposure to the bounties of nature, and learn to be connected with the natural world. That is why, unique field trips and study tours are key components of the Wisdom calendar.

We collaborated with Livelihood Alternatives to create an immersive experience for our children with a special visit to Suando, the birthplace of Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, and to also learn about natural farming in Satyabadi block of Puri district. Our focus is on experiential learning for our young people, so that they understand and take pride in our leadership, traditions and practices. While children learnt about the life and work of Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, under the guidance of our Vice Chairperson, Ms. Panchami Manoo Ukil, they also saw natural farming initiatives like mushroom cultivation and pisciculture first hand. We believe that it is exposure like this that helps young minds broaden their knowledge and outlook outside the classroom, which also promotes the principles of NEP2020.

Experiential Learning – going beyond the curriculum and classrooms is the true essence of learning! And to make this happen, it is our constant endeavour to ensure that our young people discover their roots and find anchors in the wisdom therein. Our Heritage Code enjoins us to connect our children with the precious legacies of Odisha’s heritage and culture. Therefore, since inception in 2018, we have organized field visits to heritage sites of the state, in order that they learn about traditions, encompassing both tangible artifacts and intangible aspects, fostering a deeper understanding of our past and present. One such visit was to the important Buddhist heritage site of Ratnagiri, led by our Vice Chairperson, Ms. Panchami Manoo Ukil, where children explored the cradle of Buddhism in Odisha with great excitement.

Odisha’s heritage of handicrafts is as rich as its legacy of handlooms and textiles. Over centuries our handcrafted products have created an identity and a tradition that is multifaceted, and independent. As for us, a rooted value system and sustainability being at the very core of our vision, we are always looking for opportunities to familiarise our children with the concept of preservation of our roots and culture. We use and promote handcrafted products in our regular child centric curriculum alongside the latest tech tools. We focus on arts and crafts which have been an integral part of the heritage of Odisha. The dying art of making Gobar Kandhei or Cow Dung Toys belongs to this rich tradition. Enabled by our Vice Chairperson, Ms. Panchami Manoo Ukil, the school had commissioned toys from the octogenarian artist Smt. Sashimoni Moharana of Raghurajpur. While having access to all modern play resources, our children also play with these traditional toys. We are proud to be able to use her works to anchor and inspire our young people.

As an organization, and as a team, led by our Vice Chairperson, Ms. Panchami Manoo Ukil, we take immense pride in Odisha’s bounteous handloom and textile legacy. Odisha handlooms are at the core of our dress code, since inception in 2018. From the time The DN Wisdom Tree Global School started its journey, handlooms are our go-to dress code, not just for all staff and service teams, but importantly, also for our children. Every school event becomes extra special as we celebrate with handlooms of our state. We have joyfully incorporated the use of Odisha Handlooms and other handcrafted products as part of our Heritage Code, reflected in our everyday practices – as seen in our team dress code and in the costumes of our children as well, on special occasions like the Annual Sports Day. We firmly believe that Experiential Learning is the key if we are to raise sensitive global citizens. Therefore, our children get first hand exposure to the handloom legacy of Odisha. We took our young people on a trip to Maniabandha village. It was an opportunity to introduce our children to the making of Maniabandha handlooms, especially the famed ‘Khandua’ sarees that have been woven here for hundreds of years.

To be in the lap of nature, the thrill of watching thousands of birds in action, listening to stories of conservation, trying to understand their role as earth guardians, and, just being out in the wide openness with friends, reveling in the soaring spirit of freedom at Mangalajodi, the bird paradise.

Traditionally, our educational journey begins with a reverential commitment and connection to the Goddess of Learning, with worship, and thereafter, the use of all educational material. This offering of our aspiration to learn is for a lifetime, through the seasons. These are our heritage roots, that help us find and strengthen our global wings. A beautiful pairing of Odissi Music and Dance, here’s ‘Jha Champu’ performed by Wisdomites, which they learnt under the inspiring guidance of our Vice Chairperson, Ms. Panchami Manoo Ukil.

Champu, a combination of poetry and prose, is a Odissi classical music treasure. In a Champu composition, every stanza starts with the same alphabet. Champu in Odia usually has 34 songs, one for each consonant of the alphabet. Our young Wisdomites are exploring these heritage treasures of classical music and dance with energy and verve.

Here are vignettes of activities we take our children through the course of the academic year.
