MAKARA SANKRANTI – KITE MAKING AND KITE FLYING ACTIVITY
Why are kites flown on Makara Sankranti?
The ultra-violet rays of the Sun are Nature’s greatest germicide. In the winter, the dimmed down sun does not beam adequately strong ultraviolet rays and therefore we see the onslaught of diseases from bacteria and viruses like skin infections, coughs, colds and viral fever. Because of the bitter cold, people hesitate to move outdoors, and therefore are completely bereft of the benefits of the Sun’s energies.
By ritualising kite-flying on this day of Makara Sankranti and thereafter, days that see the sun warmer and brighter because of the onset of Uttarayan, our ancient seers, physicians and ancestors encouraged people to stay outdoors and get exposed to the disinfecting sun rays for long stretches of time as they fly the kites. Apart from replenishment of Vitamin D, the intensity of long drawn infections also reduces, and people feel invigorated and rejuvenated, getting rid of the lethargy of staying indoors.
As always, our ancient rituals are backed by scientific reasoning.
